6 Tips to Keep Your Lungs in Tip-Top Shape

Our lungs are one of the most important organs that help to keep us alive. Our lungs are frequently exposed to air pollution, second hand tobacco smoke, chemicals and dust. Over 3 million people die each year from Chronic Respiratory Diseases (COPD’s) and 235 million people suffer from asthma. How do we battle this constant exposure and keep our lungs in tip-top shape? Here are  6  Tips to help keep them strong:

Avoid Exposure to Pollutants

Chemicals found in your home, outdoor air pollution, second hand smoke, are all factors that can cause or worsen lung disease.

  • Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, but if you have to be sure to open the windows and turn on the fans to ventilate the air
  • Make your home and car a smoke-free zone
  • Avoid going outside on days when air pollution warnings are high
  • Test your home for radon.

Don’t Smoke (Put down that cigarette!)

Cigarette smoking is one of the highest causes of lung cancer and COPD. It can also lead to bronchitis and emphysema. If you are a smoker and want to quit smoking  the American Lung Association can help.

Exercise

Aerobic exercise has many health benefits, especially for your lungs! It can improve your lung capacity and lung function. So head to the gym and start walking on that treadmill, join an aerobics class, or go for a swim! You can also go for a long stroll outdoors (as long as the air pollution alert is low).

Avoid Getting Infections

Try to avoid getting colds or respiratory infections by:

  • washing  your hand frequently
  • getting a flu shot
  • brushing  your teeth at least twice a day
  • avoiding large crowds during cold and flu season.

Schedule a Regular Health Visit/Physical with Your Doctor Once a Year

One of the best defenses in fighting lung disease is early detection. During your annual check-up your doctor can listen to your lungs to make sure there aren’t any issues.

  1. In our home it has fully proven to be effective on bacteria, viruses, & air always smells fresh. We never seem to get sick like a lot of people do. Giving full credit (Whether it helped this issue or not ) to the fact that a very bad snorer has nights of sleep now, not nights of constantly been woke up from snoring issues. No dust floating around all night now, but there was lots of dust etc floating around before this machine arrived at our home. Thanks so much Aerus Guys.
